About Luciane (Lu) Hawkins:
Hello! Oi! ¡Hola!

My family is a multicultural  Brazilian-American family. As many of you could tell by my name, Luciane Padilha Figueiredo da Cruz Azevedo-Hawkins, I was not born in the United States of America. I was born and reared in Curitiba, Brazil – a city of over three million people. In the United States, I go by Luciane Padilha Hawkins, and all of my friends call me “Lu.” Names are important in Brazil; my name means, “Daughter of the Light.” My husband,  Danny Hawkins, is American, and he was born and raised in Missouri. In 2004, we met in Brazil while he was visiting my church. In 2005, we have got married. This year we have been married for 14 years! Our son, Daniel Hawkins, is 12-years old, and he was born in Curitiba, Brazil; at birth, he received dual citizenship, American and Brazilian. Cultural and ancestry play important roles in our family. We honor our American and Brazilian roots, ancestry, culture, and customs. My family and I own and operate a network of companies, The Hawkins Intellectual Property Holdings LLC, Hawkins Educational Services, and we direct our nonprofit The Adauri Foundation. My husband writer; this year, he is publishing his first book (Unbelievable), and he is a motivational speaker -- sharing his experiences in the United States and around the world. You can learn more about Danny here. He is also a licensed and ordained minister, social worker, and educator. Our son, Daniel, is involved in our family's community outreaches, after-school programs, volunteering, and giving back to the community.  He enjoys spending time with his friends, reading, and playing Playstation with his friends.

From a small girl living in the favela in Brazil, my journey in life led me to Springfield, Missouri and to Missouri State University and the College of Education. I was awarded scholarships and grants which allowed me to become the educator I always wanted to be. Even with the return of bone cancer, the COE helped me reach my goal of graduating with a BsEd (2015). In May 2017, I graduated with my MsEd in Literacy from Missouri State. This past March, I was accepted into Johns Hopkins University - School of Education, and, more recently, Yale University's Online Program (Fostering Inclusion and Diversity). My family and I believe in the power of education. Many people dream, but to make dreams come true requires planning, dedication, and the right pathway starting with education. Education is a key to release one's potential. One's potential is a key to leave poverty, overcome adversities, and live one's best life today.
